DIY: tiles transformed into photo coasters

from these:

to these:

The other day I shared one of my favorite Pinterest inspiration projects:  wood photo transfer.
I had been going crazy transferring photos to various wood blocks until I discovered that it also works on tiles!  Thus my new collection of coasters.  Now we need to have a massive party because I don't know how else I am going to use so many coasters.

These really are super easy to make - much easier than the wood blocks.  I bought several 4.25"x4.25" tiles from Home Depot for .16 each.  The standard white gloss square tiles are perfect.  Then print your photos to match the size.  Instagram photos are perfect for these square tiles and I know most people have a ton of Instagram photos on their phones they don't know what to do with.  Then just follow the same steps as the wood transfer.  I think the paper removal is even easier on the tiles.

I also tried it on more rustic tiles and it worked really well too so feel free to experiment a bit and have fun.

 HAPPY CRAFTING!

Oh my, what a great project! I don't have a single coaster in my home and this would be a fabulous way to get my instagram photos out in plain site. It would make a great birthday or wedding present, too!

So, I tried this and it doesn't work for me. The pictures are not transferring for some reason and I am hoping you can help me out. The only difference I did was on the gel medium. When I had gotten to the store to purchase it I had forgotten exactly what it looked like but had remembered the name brand. It is the same brand but Matte Gel Gel Medium, instead of Gloss Gel. Does this make a difference? Thanks!

The gel medium you purchased should work just fine. The only difference would be a shiny vs. matte look. Are you using a high grade printer and ink? My home printer wouldn't work so I printed mine at work or kinkos to get the best quality print. Also print on basic printer paper, not card stock or photo paper. Lastly are you letting it dry for 8 hrs? Also since tiles are glossy you have to be more careful when removing the paper.

I got them printed at Costco...maybe its the wrong type of print/paper? That would be the only thing I can think of.

PS- this is the same person. Thanks:)

Well it's definitely a high enough quality at Costco. It definitely can not be thick or glossy paper. Thin, basic paper works best. Are you putting a really thick coat of gel medium on it? I would just really lay that on. I'm sorry this isn't working. I hope you get it working.

Can the tiles be used on a floor, table top or wall after you have them finished? And do you modge podge them after you finish teansfering the pic?

Great question. First of all, I do modge podge them afterwards and they have held up great with much use as coasters. I personally have not tried to use then as tile for floors, walls or counters. I imagine they would work great on a table top. However if used for floors or anything else with heavy traffic I would look into a stronger, better coating. Maybe even resin or something. Let me know if you try it!

Is Simply (brand) "acrylic gloss medium" from the craft aisle at Walmart the same as the "gel gloss" you speak of...?

It`s really simple a good work on Rustic Tiles .
I will make some myself later.

I need help! My finished product came out blury! I used the exact supplies and technique but once I rubbed off the paper my photo was completely blury nothing like the original. I did notice once I applied the picture to the wet gel the picture was somewhat blury but figured it would be clear once it dried and I took off the paper. I did slightly press down on the image once I applied to to make sure it had allude contact with the gel. I don't know what went wrong. I'm disappointed. Please help!

I love that you turned the tiles into photo coasters! I have seen DIY on these before, but the photos just so much better than any other ones that I have seen. They look professionally done. Beautiful work! http://blackwellscarpet.com/ceramictile.html
